There are not any diagnostic bands in either the IR or the NMR for compounds that contain non-aromatic rings. The reason we have devoted a special section to this topic is because students forget to think of rings when trying to draw a structure given the IR and NMR. They also forget that heteroatoms can be in rings. Spectroscopy problem sets often include compounds that contain rings such as the following:
